NEUSCHWANSTEIN & HOHENSCHWANGAU CASTLES
Winter is the best time to experience the royal palaces of Neuschwanstein and Hohenschwangau without the normal hustle and bustle. As the snow gently falls, the mountains turn into deeply snow-covered alpine giants, and the ice on the lakes glistens in the sunshine – this is the best time to walk in the footsteps of King Ludwig II. During the cold season, the fairytale castles of Neuschwanstein and Hohenschwangau show their peaceful side – namely without the hundreds of visitors; in other words, just as the Bavarian king experienced them.
Füssen is the romantic soul of Bavaria. As such, you should make sure to schedule a detour into the holiday resort next to Neuschwanstein. The snowy, light-filled streets of the Old Town are like a homely living room. In the wintertime, shops, restaurants and cafés become cosy, warm and luminescent destinations.
The hand-carved Christmas crib scenes featuring dozens of figures can be enjoyed in the baroque churches as soon as Advent begins. The Füssen Adventmarkt in the baroque inner courtyard of St Mang Abbey is especially atmospheric. The market stalls are carefully based on the medieval façades of the town. In the festive glow of the Christmas lights, You can admire traditional handicrafts everywhere. It smells of Lebkuchen, mulled wine and punch. Neither locals nor holidaymakers are able to resist the sweet temptations.
