Milan’s most popular square is home to the Duomo, the city’s cathedral and is the heart of the city. Milan’s elegant shopping mall is within buildings lining two arcades which form a cross-shape. Giuseppe Mengoni designed the structure in 1877 when he was chosen to redesign the historic area between Piazza della Scala and the Duomo. The purpose built structure was an immediate success and earned the nickname the “Salon of Milan” as it was a popular gathering place.
