Gastronomic Tour in Marche and Umbria

Our gourmet tour focuses on two Italy’s richly diverse culinary regions: discover the foods, wines and hill towns of Marche and Umbria.

Start Your gastronomic adventure from Rome and head north into Umbria region, known for its gastronomic jewels characterizing the whole territory and as pilgrimage destination because of San Francesco’s life places. The route goes across the “Strada del Sagrantino”, the land of Umbrian wines. Included the visit of a canteen and tasting of renowned red wine Sagrantino DOCG. The full day tour will continue to the medieval town of Perugia to discover the Perugina Factory, the most important Italian establishment specialized in chocolate and confectionery. Along the way stop to Assisi, the birthplace of Saint Francisco, today one of the most impressive pilgrimage sites in the world.

Enjoy a relaxing drive through beautiful and colorful landscapes to reach the wonderful medieval town of Ascoli Piceno, famous for its towers and the warm ivory colour of the local travertine characterizing the whole historic centre. Norcia is worthwhile visiting for its typical “norcineria”, labs with processing and sale of pork. The tour ends with a tasting of cold cuts and local cheese.

The gastronomic tour continues into Marche region, You will first stop in Recanati, characterized by beautiful glimpses and landscapes from every point of the town which lies on top of a hill at 300m above the sea level. Taste the famous “brodetto di Porto Recanati” (fish soup). Depart to Ancona, the capital of the region, and time at disposal to explore the historical center of the town. Standing on a promontory overlooking the Adriatic sea, Ancona offers enchanting views from its Gulf to the Regional Park of Monte Conero, a natural preserved oasis directly south of the city with lots of breathtaking views of the whole Riviera.

Urbino is a must for those who want to plan an in-depth cultural tour of Italy. An attractive hill-town famed for theRenaissance court of Federico da Montefeltro. The city center has UNESCO World Heritage status for representing “a pinnacle of Renaissance art and architecture”.

A scenic route leads to the enchanting Furlo Gorge (Gola del Furlo), a great naturalistic place with unique specimens of flora and fauna, not far from the small town of Acqualagna, a small village world known for its delicious truffles, absolutely worth tasting! The tour ends in Gubbio, a picturesque town  with well preserved medieval walls and monuments. Before heading towards Rome, stop at Frasassi to visit the enchanting caves, one of the most wonderful stalactites and stalagmites complex in Europe.

After breakfast visit of the Perugina Factory, the most important Italian establishment specialized in chocolate and confectionery. In the afternoon transfer to Assisi, pilgrimage destination and place full of artistic works. Later come back to Perugia.

Day 4: Perugia - Norcia - Ascoli Piceno

After breakfast travel through beautiful and colorful landscapes, vineyards and olive groves. Stop in Norcia in a typical “norcineria” where You will find exclusively production and sale of pork. Tasting of cold cuts and cheese. Then transfer to Ascoli Piceno, characterized by the ivory-white colour of the local travertine used to build houses. Day 5: Ascoli Piceno - Recanati - Ancona

After breakfast transfer to Recanati, situated atop a hill at 300m above the sea level. The Marche region offers most fish dishes such as “brodetto di Porto Recanati” (fish soup). Tour Location

"Strada del Sagrantino"

The “Strada del Sagrantino” is a route between the land of the renowned Sagrantino DOCG wine, in the hearth of Umbria. The landscape is enchanting with hills, vineyards, olive groves, medieval castles. Visit of the winery “Cantine Adanti”, one of the historic cellars of this area, covering 40 hectares of land. Tasting of 6 wines with a little taste of local cheese and cured meats.

Perugia

Perugia is an ancient enchanting town with five historic districts enclosed by the Etruscan walls. It offers magnificent art and historic highlights to the visitors, such as the huge bastions, the 15th century building of the Old University, the Cathedral and Priori Palace. Time at disposal to visit the city centre, the famous panoramic gardens, the fortress built by Pope Paul III in 1540. The Perugina Factory was founded early last century in the historic center of Perugia to produce  confetti, a history of several successes till now. Visit of the factory and of the Historical Museum telling the Italian art of chocolate through images, curiosity, packaging and films. Tasting of some Perugina delights.

Assisi

Assisi lies on the slopes of Monte Subasio and is a UNESCO World Heritage site. It has origins dating to Roman times but the current appearance is due to its medieval development. The oldest part of the town has eight fortified entrance portals and a long city wall, topped by two castles: the Major Castle and the Minor one. Visit this important religious town, with the Basilica of St. Francis, the Basilica of Santa Chiara and the Church of St Peter.

Norcia

Norcia gained political importance during Roman times; upset by the Longobards and the Goths, it was an active medieval center. Lots of its historical treasures have been damaged by earthquakes over the centuries. Norcia is known also for its “norcinerie”, labs with processing and sale of pork meat. Tasting at the “Norcineria Fratelli Ansuini”: you can taste cold cuts, local cheese together with bread, wine and water.

Ascoli Piceno

Ascoli Piceno is a wonderful medieval town, surrounded on three sides by 2 rivers. It’s famous for its towers and the warm ivory colour of the local travertine characterizing the whole historic centre. Visit of the main square Piazza del Popolo with some of the most important buildings, such as the Palace of the Captains of the 13th century,  the historic Caffè Meletti and the church of St Francis.

Recanati

Recanati lies on top of a hill at 300m above sea level, from where you can admire a landscape with high mountains, prosperous valleys and crystal endless sea. The town has important buildings such as the Municipal Art Gallery, hosted by the Town Hall, and Leopardi Palace, birthplace of the famous writer Giacomo Leopardi, on the end of the 18° century.  Time at leisure to visit Recanati. Typical lunch in the country house “Il Raggio Verde” to taste local products, such as “vincisgrassi”, ravioli…

Ancona

Ancona is on a promontory overlooking the Adriatic sea and formed by the northern foothills of Mount Conero. The most known monument is the Romanesque-Gothic Cathedral of San Ciriaco with Byzantine elements. Stroll through the city center.

Regional Park

The Conero Park is a natural oasis overlooking the sea with lots of breathtaking views of the whole Conero Riviera. It was founded in 1987 on 5800 hectares to preserve a nature of great value. This area is known not only for flora and fauna but also for its flavors, such as honey, oil and the famous Rosso Conero wine. Visit of the winery Oriano Mercante, a really small company having  received awards and certificates of quality and excellence. Tasting of 3 wines together with local products such as vegetables, cheeses and cold meats.

Urbino

Urbino is a real treasure on a hill, with a historical centre named World Heritage site by UNESCO thanks to its history and beauty. It has ancient origins but the first documents telling of it appeared only in the 3rd century b.C. Surrounded by a long wall of brick and adorned with sandstone buildings, Urbino was the “cradle of the Renaissance”. Visit the city center with its streets running up and down and with its historic buildings.

Furlo Gorge

The “Gola del Furlo” is an authentic paradise with rocky walls produced by the erosion of the Candigliano River. This place has a unique and breathtaking charm.

Acqualagna

Acqualagna is a small village famous for the truffle trade. Here visit of the “Aqualagna Tartufi”,  with more than 30 years of experience in truffle sector.  The raw selected truffles are processed according to ancient techniques ensuring the maximum authenticity. Tasting of truffle products such as crostini with truffles, meats and cheeses, some of them aromatized with truffle, local wine. Typical lunch at the Aqualagna Tartufi.

Gubbio

Gubbio is one of the most beautiful cities of Umbria and has historical highlights such as the Cathedral, its main church where You can admire the works of the greatest artists of the 16th century. In the scenic and panoramic Piazza Grande, the main square, You find Palazzo dei Consoli, the symbol of the city, in Gothic style. Outside the ancient walls there is a Roman Theatre, stage for classical performances in summer.

Frasassi Caves

Frasassi Caves are the largest underground complex in Europe, with a series of tunnels for a total length of about 30 km, divided into 8 different geological levels. Famous for their stalactites and stalagmites, ancient limestone concentrations, of particular forms. Guided visit of the caves: the path is 1,5 km and the temperature inside is of 14°, so you should wear a sweater and comfortable shoes.

Rome

Ancient capital of a great empire, born and expanded  along the Tiber river since the ancient times, Rome developed during the centuries, especially in the Renaissance and Baroque period, with a rich heritage that has given the reputation of “the world’s biggest open air museum”.Visit the historic center with the Colosseum, worldwide symbol of Rome; Saint Peter’s Basilica and the Vatican Museums. Don’t forget the area of the Trident with the famous Via Condotti, Via Borgognona, Via Frattina and Piazza di Spagna with its majestic staircase, perfect places for your fashion and design shopping.
