Gourmet Tour in Campania

The Campania region of Italy—located south of Rome on the west coast of the country, along the Tyrrhenian Sea—should be on every culinary traveler’s list. The city of Naples is the birthplace of Pizza Margherita (a tomato, basil, and mozzarella pie with the colors of the Italian flag), and its pizzerias are celebrated around the globe. The Neapolitan cuisine is one of the most popular in the world. The surrounding area, which includes Pompeii and the Amalfi coast, is also justly famous for its fantastic San Marzano tomatoes, pristine seafood, and pasta.

While Campania is a major exporter of wine, olive oil, pasta, and canned tomatoes, some of the most spectacular food of the region can only be experienced when You are there: Fresh, still-warm mozzarella, floating in brine; bubbly, wood-fired pizza; and just-caught shellfish tossed with pasta are just a few of the can’t-miss dishes.

Take the chance to taste a selection of real Neapolitan food in a tasteful, cultural and historical itinerary, guided by Your professional tour guide. Walking through the old and lively street market of Pignasecca, full of flavors and calls from the hawkers and through the well-known Spaccanapoli way You will reach the historic center of Naples. Guided by Your expert city trainer You will have access to the best pizza places, fry places, taverns. Have a tasting of “Cuoppo” di frittura (a “cone” of fried food), Buffalo mozzarella, smoked Provola cheese, Parma ham, Neapolitan salame, Taralli (small bagles) with almonds and black pepper, Ziti pasta with sauce, a glass of typical red.

One cannot miss having a course of traditional Neapolitan pastry, learn the techniques of haute patisserie, or simply acquire some rudimentary cooking skills. Since 1992 all this has been possible inside the kitchen of a beautiful villa in the city’s Vomero district, thanks to Carmela, a biologist with a passion for cooking.

Food and wine are highlights of the Amalfi Coast, the most spectacular and beautiful coastline in Italy. An expert guide will be at disposal for a walking tour of the historical center of Amalfi and he will bring back to life all the mystic beauty of the Cathedral of Saint Andrew which stands up superbly on the top of a great flight of steps leading up from the main square. The tour continues towards Furore where You will have the chance to visit one of the most beautiful wineries of this land. The chef winemaker will explain all the cultivation and production techniques of the local wine. Lunch in style in a delightful restaurant next to the property and tasting of different kinds of wine. The last stop will be in Ravellothe unforgettable land of poets and artists. Villa Rufolo is a fundamental landmark for those who want to enjoy a breathtaking view on the Gulf surrounded by flowered and enchanted gardens.

A full day excursion combining art and eno-gastronomy allows You to visit the Royal Palace of Caserta built by Charles III of the Bourbon Family, aiming to emulate his cousin’s palace of Versailles. The Palace is surrounded by a luxuriant park with lovely fountains and waterfalls. Thereafter continue to S. Agata de’ Goti, home town of Bill de Blasio, current mayor of New York city. The village is situated in the heart of Campania countryside and dates back to the 5th century. Enjoy a visit with wine tasting at the Mustilli winery, dug in the tuff stone underneath the family residence. Then head onto the historical family residence for lunch based on typical local products, accompanied by three different wines and olive oil.

End this gourmet tour by visiting the town of Benevento, which has a rich and complex history stretching back even before Rome. This area is well known for the Sannio gastronomy: extra-virgin olive oil, fresh handmade pasta, beef, sheep and pork, cheese, honey, fruit, walnuts and chestnuts. Vineyards are among the most important of the entire region, but the name of the town of Benevento is linked with a special yellow liquor, known as “Strega” (The Witch), and the Torronea dessert made with honey and hazelnuts, absolutely worth tasting.

The underground city spreads below the entire old town, its myths and legends are still alive in the imagination of all the neapolitans. The underground of Naples fascinates and impresses for the grandeur of the cavities, and therefore for the spaces, and for the maze of tunnels that cross each other for several miles below the streets and the buildings.

BENEVENTO

An aura of history permeates the ancient land of the Samnites, named Beneventum by the Romans, who first colonized it. It is a Province filled with history, archaeological sites and marvelous landscapes, and it surprises for its atmosphere of composed mysticism that has always characterized it. Entering it is akin to blurring the confines of present and past, and means discovering the folkloric and gastronomic traditions that root themselves in distant history. The ingredients of Sanniogastronomy have been the same for centuries: extra-virgin olive oil, fresh handmade pasta, beef, sheep and pork, cheese, honey, fruit, walnuts and chestnuts. Food once defined as poor because of its peasant origins most certainly does not lack of flavor and, in fact, is rich and intense. The name of the town of Benevento is linked with a special yellow liquor, known as “Strega” (The Witch) and the Torrone, a dessert made with honey and hazelnuts. Tasting this fantastic cookie. Guided visit of San Marco dei Cavoti. The historical Diodorus Siculus attests the involvement of these people in the Samnite wars, alongside Roma.  In the late nineteenth century Cav. Innocent Borrillo invented a product become a symbol of this village: he enclosed in a sweet wrapper with icing sugar and cocoa, a heart of almonds and hazelnuts . Thus was born the Croccantino of San Marco dei Caboti.
